Interview with a Leader: Not every leader is famous, gets her or his picture in the newspaper, or is quoted in books. Select a person who is in a formal sport leadership position and use that person as a case study for principles discussed in this class. You might select: a) an administrator; b) business person; c) a coach; d) governing body official; e) the President (CEO) of a non-profit organization; f) an executive of a sports franchise.
Requirements:
Minimum Length: 5 pages
Format: APA format, typed, double-spaced, 12-point font, cover page.
Focus/Content: Your paper should answer four questions: 1) What is this person’s leadership style? 2) Why has this person chosen that style? (i.e. probe the person’s reasoning and values); 3) Is this style effective? 4) What is the evidence?
Your paper should also include the interview guide listing the specific questions you asked to solicit your information. Base your questions on specific theoretical models and/or class discussion. Your interview guide should include no more than 10 questions. Your paper should be written as a summary and analysis of the respondent’s answers to your questions, not a verbatim transcript of those answers.
Sample interview questions.
·What do you do every day?
·What qualities or skills do you have that enable you to do what you do?
·What do you do that enables your employees to provide you with quality and efficient work?
·What is your biggest frustration as a leader?
·What has been your greatest success to date?
·How do you empower employees?
·How do you recognize your employees for outstanding effort?
·What do you value most in an employee and why?
Brainstorm any additional questions.
Grading: Papers that receive an “A” will reflect the following criteria: a) be well written; b) free of grammatical and composition errors; c) be based on a well-developed interview guide; d) answer the 4 questions posed in the assignment; and e) conform to the assignment requirements. Papers receiving less than an “A” will be deficient in one or a combination of criteria (a)-(e). The greater the deficiency, the lower the grade.
