Public Art & Creativity
Art has long been a mirror reflecting the human experience, from ancient cave paintings to towering sculptures that adorn our cityscapes. Public art, with its undeniable presence in shared spaces, invites us to ponder its messages, to question its context, and to consider the impact it has on the communities it inhabits. Meanwhile, the rise of AI generated images introduces us to a new dimension to the artistic landscape, igniting discussions about the essence of creativity, and the ways in which technology reshapes artistic expression.
How to Prepare for this DiscussionReview the materials on the M1 Learning Activities page
Research a work of public art that, in your opinion, exemplifies exceptional creativity.
InstructionsResearch a public artwork that you find to be a remarkable embodiment of creativity. Consider a piece of public art in your own community, one that is beloved by a wide audience, or a controversial example. This could include sculptures, murals, installations, or any other form of art that is accessible to the public. Remember, it must be a work of public art (see the assigned readings and particularly, pages 544, 545, and 550 of your book to review examples of art in the public sphere). To avoid unnecessary repetition, please do NOT choose something that has not already been discussed in your group.
Identify the work (artist name, title, material/media, dimensions, date, and location) and embed an image of the chosen work in your post. You must post an image of the work so everyone can see it. Be sure to correctly label it – see textbook for examples of labeling images.
Do not use a work that someone else has already chosen or you will have a -.5 deduction.
Which of the five “purposes of art” detailed in the presentation would you say the work could be categorized? Explain.
What was the intent of the public work chosen? What does it communicate to you? Do you believe the artist(s) effectively conveyed their ideas and concepts? Why or why not?
How do the creative choices made by the artist influence the overall impact and reception of the work? Examine how the public’s interaction with the artwork is influenced by its creative design and integration into the space. Would you consider it a site-specific work of art? Why or why not?
Next, consider The Case of DALL-E2 and the rise of other AI image generators such as Adobe Firefly, Midjourney, Craiyon, and others.
Reflect on AI’s capacity for creativity. Should we classify AI-generated images as art? In your opinion, what are the qualifications for something to be considered art?
Are there ethical problems when it comes to AI generating art?
Now, be creative! Generate your own image using Copilot, GPT Chat, Gemini or any other Generative Ai programs of your choice. Be sure to give the Generative Ai a clear prompt (called “prompt engineering”) for directions. Label your image with a title and which software you chose — and be sure to embed the image in your post by the paragraph of your discussion. Here are some examples from using Copilot with prompt engineering:PROMPT: “Create an image of a flamingo riding a skateboard in ancient Greek style fresco.”
