Urban Transportation Technology:Current Event
Chapter 2 of American Cities & Technologystates that by the 1880s, “the trolley [the electric street car] represented progress and technological achievement; no community that thought well of its future could afford to be thought backward and unpromising. The electric street car was a source of pride; the very symbol of a city.”
Even today, not all American cities have rapid transit trains, but the Valley of the Sun does! From 1887 to 1948, the Phoenix Street Railway System provided trolley service connecting Phoenix, Tempe, Mesa and Scottsdale. And now, we have the Phoenix Light Rail, also known as “The Metro”.
Many European cities also have rapid transit trains. London’s Underground is a perfect example of a complex European transit system that during the work week moves large number of people from the suburbs into the city center.
